It's definitely not a good idea to put all your eggs in one basket. I've been a self-employed writer/editor for 15 years and I've learned the hard way that you need to have as many irons in the fire as possible. I've had some of my best clients call and cancel at a moment's notice, so you really can't rely on any one stream of income because you never know how long it's going to last. You need to keep moving and keep pushing in every direction that you can.

As for Medium, I love writing here and developing my publication but I have never earned much money from it - definitely not enough for it to be one of my main sources of income. But it is a good, regular source of a small amount of money that I add to other small streams of income in a savings account. For that alone, I am grateful.

You're a talented writer, Shannon, and I'm sure there are many other opportunities for you outside Medium. It might be a good time to pursue some of them because you never know when a new source of income is going to appear! If you stay positive, I'm sure you'll find some new ways of making money as a writer - ways that suit you personally. I completely agree that not all ways are suitable for you, but that's OK - there are many opportunities out there.

In the meantime, I hope your daughter has a wonderful birthday!

Best wishes,

Roz
